Ask your MP to oppose changes to the Work Capability Assessment

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) wants to make changes to the Work Capability Assessment. We want the Government to scrap these dangerous plans.

Steve, who Z2K helped with his successful appeal against a Work Capability Assessment, explains more:

Several years ago, I had a car crash that left me unable to work, and with ongoing physical, mental, and neurological health problems. Earlier this year, Z2K supported me to challenge the Department for Work and Pensions’ decision about my fitness to work.

While this was going on, I had to regularly attend the Jobcentre and talk to staff who didn’t want to know about my health problems, or I would risk losing even more of my benefits. And I was left with no money in the bank after I’d paid my rent. All of this had a tremendous impact on my mental health, at a time when my mum was dying – and it certainly didn’t make me more able to work.

Thanks to Z2K, an independent Tribunal eventually agreed that there would be a substantial risk to myself or people around me if DWP forced me to take steps towards work.

But the government is planning to water down these vital protections, and wants to announce changes at the Autumn Statement next month.

If this happens, I and thousands of people like me could have their benefits cut, and be forced to take steps towards work that it isn’t safe or realistic for us to do – or face benefit sanctions.
